Areas of Interest:

  • Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness. Sometimes it runs in the family through hereditary. It affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality. It may not be a common mental disorder but the symptoms can be very disabling. The characteristic features are Hallucinations, Delusions, thought disorder, reduced feeling or expression in face, trouble focusing or paying attention are some of the symptoms. It is due to chemical changes in the brain and also influenced by various psycho-social factors, malnutrition before birth, exposure to viruses may be the other reasons to get Schizophrenia.

With family support and a caretaker, a person living with Schizophrenia can live a healthy life and can overcome many of its effects through medication and support. Treatment focuses on symptoms as cause is still unknown.

At Suraksha, the treatment model followed focuses on the quality of life after the incident or attack of Schizophrenia. At Suraksha, we integrate medication, therapies to address psychosocial issues, individual case management, involvement of family and the caretaker, and supportive education and counseling to family members and caretakers on employment services. We take care to reduce the symptoms.

  • There has been increase in the prevalence of drug addiction especially nicotine, alcohol, inhalants, cannabis, heroin, cocaine etc. With increase in use of technology more & more people becoming dependent on gadgets/ devices which can lead on to addictive behaviours.

Handing over the mobile or the remote to a child to keep the kid quiet is an alarming practice which is becoming common.

With increase in research in the field of addiction medicine, more treatment options are available which can be utilized by the patients and foster recovery. As a qualified Neuro-Psychriatist, Dr Suresh has the expertise, qualification and experience to guide and treat such patients. The inpatient service with specialised care is available for serious/emergency cases.

  • A sound body in a sound mind. As the saying goes, every one of us need to keep both our mind and body fit and one cannot do without the other being healthy. Consultation Liaison Psychiatry is a neglected area in India. It is a sub-speciality of clinical psychiatry where the teaching, research activities are brought together to mutually support the patient and the doctor. Dr Suresh strongly believes in the old tradition of home care and home support systems and advocates a ceaseless interaction between mind and body in a dynamic way. This field has brought psychiatry out of the mental asylums to the general hospitals and Suraksha hospital’s prime focus is to remove the stigma and denial attached with mental illness and people living with Mental Illness (PMI) not only among families, public but also among professionals and work places.

This field has also led to changes in the medical education and in the providing comprehensive management to the physically ill through teaching and research. Dr Suresh is active in writing research papers and teaching in medical institutions.

  • Dissociative disorders (DD) are mental conditions that lead to disruptions or breakdown of memory, awareness, identity or perception. People with dissociative disorders use dissociation as a defence mechanism involuntarily. It is also true pathologically. A loss of memory and amnesia happen. Dissociative disorders involve problems with memory, identity, emotion, perception, behavior and sense of self. These symptoms can potentially disrupt every area of mental functioning. In some cases, symptoms include the experience of detachment or a feeling as if one is outside one’s own body.

Many of these patients who have a childhood experience of physical or sexual abuse have an increased risk of dissociative identity disorder. A majority of them who have this disorder have experienced repetitive, overwhelming trauma in childhood. They tend to indulge in Suicide or suicidal thoughts and attempts. They also have self-injurious behavior. Dissociative disorders are frequently associated with previous experience of trauma.

Treatment at Suraksha typically involves psychotherapy. Under the able care of Dr Suresh, such therapies can help people gain control over the dissociative process and symptoms. The therapy is aimed to integrate the different elements of identity. At Suraksha hospital, our main goal is to improve their ability to function and live a productive, fulfilling life.

  • Child and adolescent psychiatry focuses on supporting children and families in preventing & treating mental illness among children through the diagnosis and treatment. It is becoming an important area as the  bio-psycho-social issues that affect and influence the child’s development and to monitor treatment responses to various interventions.

At Suraksha Hospital, the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry training stresses on developmental behaviour and considerations. Biological, socio-cultural, psycho-dynamics of behavior and those aspects of childhood and adolescence in the family environment and the issues they face are touched upon in both clinical and didactic experiences. Referrals to pediatric services and family support and counseling are an essential part of child and adolescent care and treatment at Suraksha Hospital. Rural residents are referred to community groups, NGOs and schools and other social welfare groups, if available in their residential area.

Childhood precursors of Borderline disorders, early detection and intervention for Psychosis of adolescents are some of the areas to name. Children normal development and up bringing are very much related to physical growth as much as mental growth, but many a time the parents and families are not equipped to deal with it. Suraksha hospital empowers them in this direction.

  • Every family has its share of senior citizens. Not just the sons and daughters but the grand children to bear the overburdening presence of elderly in the family. But many a time it is the children, who provide care and succor to the old. It is not rare that we ignore our old or send them to home. Geriatric psychiatry meets the biological and psychological needs of these old by addressing the aspects of normal aging. The psychiatric effect of acute and chronic physical illness and the biological and psycho-social aspects of the pathology of primary psychiatric disturbances of older age are taken care at Suraksha Hospital. Dr Suresh, having expertise in geriatric psychiatry is equipped to focus on prevention, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders of the elderly and he values and stresses the importance of elder care by improving and taking care of their psychiatric conditions.
